AM Best Affirms Adamjee at B (Fair)

A quiet rating action that leaves Adamjee’s credit standing exactly where it was, with the next review the only real test.

An affirmation is the rating industry’s quietest product. AM Best has just issued one for Adamjee Insurance Company Limited, keeping its financial strength rating at B (Fair) and its long-term issuer credit rating at “bb” (Fair), according to an announcement published Sept. 4.

AM Best reviewed Adamjee and returned the same grade it had before—no upgrade, no downgrade, and no new rating for the market to absorb. For an investment desk, that is the kind of release that updates a compliance file without changing a risk view; Adamjee emerges neither stronger nor weaker from the news, remaining the same credit AM Best described the last time it looked.

The only texture comes from the label “Fair,” which is not a clean bill of health: as AM Best’s own descriptor, it reads as a middle judgment, a grade that leaves room for the agency to move in either direction at the next review. An affirmation at that level says AM Best found no new reason to shift its assessment, but it does not say the old reasons for caution have disappeared.

The difference matters because rating consumers tend to treat every release as if it carried the same weight: a downgrade is an event, an upgrade is an event, while an affirmation is formal maintenance, useful for a policyholder file and the insurer’s own communications but not for the investor trying to decide whether Adamjee is becoming a better or worse credit. The release does not answer that question.

Direction is the information an affirmation leaves out, and it will have to come from the next AM Best review rather than this statement. Until then Adamjee’s rating is a receipt: a document that confirms the old grade and says nothing new about where the credit is headed.
