AM Best affirms Sigurd Rück ratings but leaves outlook unstated in excerpt
The Oct. 1 action keeps the Swiss reinsurer's A- financial strength and a- issuer credit ratings unchanged; the available excerpt cuts off before naming the outlook.
AM Best affirmed the A- (Excellent) financial strength rating and the a- (Excellent) long-term issuer credit rating of Swiss reinsurer Sigurd Rück AG on Oct. 1, leaving both grades where they sat before the review, which is the procedural meaning of an affirmation: the agency examined the company and chose not to move. The excerpt of the announcement carries the two ratings and little else, cutting off at the sentence on the outlook, so the direction AM Best attached to the grades goes unstated along with any rationale on the balance sheet. In a rating release the outlook line is where the forward view lives and the letter grades record the present, and here the present is the whole of it.
For anyone managing a counterparty list, that makes the practical content administrative: the name stays where it was, and the credit extended against it does not have to be reconsidered. Ceding companies, brokers and collateral counterparties read letter grades when deciding how much credit to allow a reinsurer, and an unchanged grade leaves one assumption in that chain undisturbed.
It is a single data point, though, and it should not be made to carry more. Reinsurance capital remains plentiful at the top of the tower, wildfire loss data calls are formalizing the tail, and new Lloyd's-backed capacity is testing underwriting discipline at the margin. An unchanged Swiss grade says nothing about where pricing, retro capacity or that discipline test goes next.
As of Oct. 1, AM Best's published view of Sigurd Rück is A- for financial strength and a- for its long-term issuer credit; the outlook, which the excerpt cuts off before naming, is the next thing about the firm worth having.
