Conduit Re appoints Anthony Mongiello as COO
The Bermuda reinsurer adds a former Aspen COO just as softer pricing shifts the fight to operations.
Conduit Re has appointed Anthony Mongiello chief operating officer, Reinsurance News reported. The hire is effective immediately, subject to Bermuda immigration approval, and fills the seat left when Stuart Quinlan retired earlier this year.
Mongiello comes from Aspen, where he served as COO of the reinsurance and capital markets businesses. At Conduit Holdings' Bermuda-based reinsurer, he will oversee operations, information technology, underwriting operations and claims, and join the executive committee. His insurance and reinsurance career spans more than 25 years. That includes a run of more than 15 years at AXA XL, ending as global head of operations for the reinsurance business.
Global pricing is softening, and capacity and competition are starting to cut prices. Bermuda's reinsurers just posted an 85.3% combined ratio for the first half, according to Insurance Capital Daily — a result driven by lighter catastrophe losses, not better underwriting. Expense discipline and processing speed are the visible outputs of the COO seat, which is why the role is more than a back-office post at a multi-line reinsurer.
CEO Neil Eckert tied the appointment to "continued growth, operational excellence and long-term strategic development." Mongiello's response — "I look forward to using my experience in operational leadership to support Conduit's continued progress" — matches that emphasis. The choice of an operations veteran over an underwriter suggests where Conduit expects the next leg of the cycle to be won.
The appointment is still conditional on Bermuda immigration approval, so the official start date is not locked. Quinlan retired earlier this year. Until approval clears, Conduit has a COO in title but not yet in the seat.
