Hawaii-bound Lala is no threat to the island's cat bonds
Forecast as a Category 1 at landfall, the storm would be the first US hurricane hit of 2026. Hawaii's outstanding cat bond structures are set for far stronger hurricanes.
Tropical Storm Lala is aimed at the Big Island, and the catastrophe-bond market is treating it as an inconvenience rather than an event. Lala was named Thursday with sustained winds near 60 mph, and the National Hurricane Center soon upgraded a hurricane watch to a hurricane warning. Forecasts bring the storm to Category 1 strength as it approaches Hawaii on Saturday, with further strengthening expected before it arrives; some model runs put the eye over the Big Island itself. That would make Lala the first US hurricane landfall of 2026, Artemis reports.
The difference between a glancing blow and a direct hit still comes down to the exact track. Either way, the hazards are familiar: heavy rainfall, flash flooding, localized storm surge. Twelve Securis, the specialist ILS manager, notes that the southern Big Island is sparsely populated and includes Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and it expects no significant ILS impacts. AbsoluteClimo chief executive Brendan Lane Larson cautions that even a storm that only scrapes the island chain can carry a meaningful human and financial toll — the sort that lands on homeowners and insurers rather than cat bond investors.
Built for a stronger Hawaii storm
The lack of alarm is structural, not a matter of complacency. Hawaii risk sits inside a number of outstanding catastrophe bonds and private collateralized reinsurance arrangements, but those contracts are written for hurricanes far more intense than a marginal Category 1. Other headwinds are already on the books. AM Best's midyear renewal analysis found property-cat rates down 16%. US severe thunderstorm losses have already passed $35 billion in 2026. A first US hurricane landfall would normally sharpen questions about attachment points and pricing. Lala, at forecast strength, is not the storm that resets them. For the bonds that cover Hawaii, the exposure that matters is the higher-category storm that hasn't formed yet.
