InEvo Re's A- is Macquarie's ticket into life reinsurance

AM Best backs the new Bermuda asset-intensive reinsurer with a stable outlook, but the 'limited' business profile is the rating to watch.

AM Best has handed InEvo Re an A- financial strength rating and a stable outlook, a credential that says more about Macquarie Group's balance-sheet commitment than about the reinsurer's own record. Reinsurance News reports the agency also set a long-term issuer credit rating of a- and described the new company's balance-sheet strength as "very strong", its operating performance as adequate, its business profile as limited, and its enterprise risk management as appropriate, with strong capital support from parent Macquarie Group.

InEvo Re launched in early 2025 as a wholly owned Macquarie Group subsidiary and a Class E regulated Bermudian reinsurer, purpose-built for asset-intensive reinsurance — the business of taking long-dated liabilities like pension risk transfer off life insurers' books and investing against them. Macquarie Asset Management's private credit and long-duration asset strategies line up with those liabilities, and AM Best notes the parent has committed explicitly to keeping the reinsurer's capital above targets.

AM Best places InEvo Re at the strongest level of its capital adequacy ratio and expects near-term profitability with prudent expense management, but the performance will be measured deal by deal because the book is built around longer-dated liabilities and investment spread as much as underwriting. That is a new-entrant profile in a segment AM Best already expects to test discipline into 2027.

An A- attached to a "very strong" balance sheet and a "limited" business profile is Macquarie's credential more than InEvo Re's track record, which is the right way for a new reinsurer to open the door. As this publication has argued, the asset-manager annexation of insurance has moved past the question of whether these balance sheets stay; the question now is how regulators price the risk they take. A stable A- gives InEvo Re a document to put in front of cedents while that question plays out.

Last month Alex Brogden joined as chief underwriting officer, an early indication that the platform is being built around underwriting structure rather than investment spread alone. The first block of deals will show whether InEvo Re can convert Macquarie's capital into a real life-reinsurance franchise, or stay a balance-sheet story with a good rating attached.
