AM Best cuts SanlamAllianz Re to B++ as Enact Re keeps its A-

The cut lands in a half-year when AM Best counted U.S. property/casualty downgrades at nearly half the prior-year level and life/health upgrades at twice the number of downgrades.

AM Best cut SanlamAllianz Re's financial strength rating to B++ from A- and moved the reinsurer's long-term issuer credit rating to bbb+, with the review status now carrying developing implications. The action landed in a half-year when the same agency counted U.S. property/casualty downgrades at nearly half the prior-year level and life/health upgrades at twice the number of downgrades. Aggregate migration is improving and individual carriers are still being moved out of the A band, and the gap between those two readings is where reinsurance counterparty risk now sits.

PWD's coverage does not say what drove the cut or name SanlamAllianz Re's cedents, its domicile, or the size of the book the rating covers; it reports the financial strength rating, the issuer credit rating, and a review status described as developing, leaving a cedent to ask whether the security standing behind a treaty is unchanged, whether additional collateral or a letter of credit enters the renewal negotiation, and whether the reinsurer's share of a program gets repriced. The notice answers none of it, and the letter grade on its own cannot.

Aggregate migration is improving and individual carriers are still being moved out of the A band.

Enact Re keeps its A- with a concentrated book

AM Best affirmed Enact Re's A- financial strength rating and flagged the reinsurer's limited business profile in the same notice. The limitation is specific: the Class 3A Bermuda reinsurer takes quota share from a single North Carolina mortgage insurer inside Enact Holdings, and its net income has increased in each year since 2023. A book that runs through one ceding relationship is the shape that invites a hard look, and the agency took the look and left the A- standing.

Put the two actions side by side and the month's discipline reads as case-by-case: Enact Re's concentration did not cost it its rating, what cost SanlamAllianz Re its rating is not stated, and the notices do not tie the two together. What they support is narrower and more useful: two reinsurers were assessed in the same period, and one of them enters renewal season below A-.
