Bermuda's record equity sets up a pricing test

The island's capital grew more than three times faster than premiums, giving the biggest balance sheets room to give back terms.

At a glance

30-second brief
  • The island's capital grew more than three times faster than premiums, giving the biggest balance sheets room to give back terms.

  • The five largest members dominate that book—Chubb at $65.9 billion, Arch Capital at $22.9 billion, Everest Group at $17.7 billion, Sompo at $15.3 billion and RenaissanceRe at $11.7 billion—and together wrote roughly two-thirds of the total, with Chubb alone a third.

  • Bermuda's equity build runs counter to third-party capital cleanup: as sidecar and collateralized reinsurance money is returned to investors, the island's platform balance sheets are accumulating the capacity instead.

Bermuda's re/insurers wrote $197.5 billion in gross premiums in 2025, the highest total on record for the island market, according to ABIR's 2025 Global Underwriting Report, and the 4.6% increase from the prior year's $188.8 billion was concentrated rather than broad: the survey's membership grew from 25 to 27 companies, the two new participants contributed $850 million of the $8.6 billion gain, and five larger members each grew premiums by at least $1 billion. ABIR says volumes were flat for most of its 27 members, which it credits to continued market discipline—insurers resisting the chase for share as rates fall.

The balance sheet numbers point to a different tension: total equity rose 16.6% to $207.7 billion, investment income climbed 34.8% to $23.4 billion, and net income increased 22.4% to $32.8 billion even after the group took a significant share of California wildfire losses, and once the two new participants' $3.9 billion of that equity gain is stripped out, the incumbents contributed $25.7 billion on their own. Premiums growing at 4.6% while equity grows at 16.6% is the classic shape of an overcapitalized market.

The five largest members dominate that book—Chubb at $65.9 billion, Arch Capital at $22.9 billion, Everest Group at $17.7 billion, Sompo at $15.3 billion and RenaissanceRe at $11.7 billion—and together wrote roughly two-thirds of the total, with Chubb alone a third. The discipline ABIR credits for flat volumes is real for many members, but the five largest are the ones writing the growth, which is where the next price war would start.

Bermuda's equity build runs counter to third-party capital cleanup: as sidecar and collateralized reinsurance money is returned to investors, the island's platform balance sheets are accumulating the capacity instead.

That concentration matters for the pricing cycle because the biggest balance sheets are the ones writing the growth, and they are the same balance sheets best positioned to give back terms when conditions turn. The soft cycle is being underwritten by record returns; the renewals that matter are the ones that give back terms before catastrophe reprices the tail, and Bermuda's record equity is the cushion that makes that give-back comfortable.

Mark Cloutier, ABIR's chairman, called 2025 “one of the strongest years ever recorded” for the market and pointed to specialty lines such as cyber, mortgage, political risk, credit and transactional liability. That expansion is real, but the report shows a market whose capital is growing more than three times as fast as its premium base, and surplus capital tends to find a price to deploy at. The discipline that held in 2025 looks less like a durable feature of the cycle than a delayed reckoning—one the next renewal will price.
